Digital Artists

Carolyn Weltman’s Art for Engineers site has nothing to do with engineering I’ve been able to discern. She’s a digital and traditional artist whose line work and color washes are delightful, delightful, delightful! Much of her work is frankly—and whimsically—erotic, and in my admittedly slightly less than humble opinion, a welcome change of pace from bad news, moronic controversy, scandal, and the usual flatulent political nonsense about “family values.”

D.L. Zimmerman has a lively, decidedly erotic site. He creates his paintings with a mouse rather than stylus and digitizing tablet, yet achieves some truly fascinating effects.

Howard Ganz has enlarged his site, which is packed with truly lovely landscapes abounding in color and fanciful brush work. He works both traditionally and digitally.

Jeanne Borofsky is a traditional painter who’s gone digital. The quality of her work is outstanding, and she even does artistamps: paintings recast as sheets of stamps. She does truly lovely work.

Your host at the renowned Digital Salon is Allan Revich, a lively artist and generous person.

Traditional Artists and Photographers

I’ve discovered a veritable cornucopia of water colors by Umbra, also known as “Andrea Sfiligoi,” an Italian artist whose nude studies involve playful line and delightfully loose color.

Sonia Menna Barreto is a Brazilian artist with a well deserved international reputation. I’ve never been deeply moved by surrealism, but her paintings tickle my fancy afresh as often as I visit her site. Her front page and entrance theme are far more playful than the usual gallery motif with rooms and walls. Her site has recently been expanded. Enjoy!

George Zucconi is a photographer and poet who’s incorporated lots of digital techniques in his work.

David Kofton is a painter who works in truly restrained color. I return to his frequently revised site at least monthly to see what’s new and study his works afresh. Some of his work is more frankly erotic than some people may find interesting, but his handling of both color and shadow is masterful.

I’m pleased to recommend Ursula Wing’s site. She’s a very promising new painter, photographer, graphic designer, and illustrator. I predict she’ll go far.

Leon Engelen is a Belgian oil painter who specializes in landscapes and animals wrought with positively photographic detail; in addition, his site includes much useful information on the techniques of traditional painting. How many traditional painters still practice the art of underpainting? What difference does it make? Visit Engelen’s site to find out.

Oleg Volk’s photographic site is diverse, playful, altogether delightful, and frequently updated. He generously includes work by other photographers.

I like to visit Saelon Renkes’ photographic site and new site now and then, partly because one of her pieces was an inspiration to me when I returned to painting after an absence of many years, partly because I like her attitudes toward figure studies and models. Her sites are updated fairly frequently, so check back often.

Art Resources

I used to look for art sites at Yahoo, but the site is becoming more television-esque every month: garish advertisements on top of garish advertisements on top of garish advertisements.

~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~
Art on the Net is an excellent starting point, and its links and links to links to links have helped me while away many an hour I might have wasted on humdrum work.
Mythago has been a favorite of mine a long time. It’s a constantly changing gallery of this, that, and several dozen other things.
David Kaiser maintains 1,000 Points of Art.
I’ve recently found a comprehensive Vermeer site!
